Future Leadership Transition Will Come, Unity Is Key - Abang Johari

SIBU, Jan 11 (Bernama) -- At 74 years old, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg acknowledged that the time will come for him to hand over the leadership to someone else.

However, he stressed that before that happens, party members must work to prevent any issues that could threaten the party’s unity. PBB, he said, has been the backbone of Sarawak’s development and must remain strong.

Citing past leadership transitions, he said the handovers from Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud to Tun Adenan Satem, and then to himself, occurred smoothly without any problems.

“Will there be any issues after me?” he asked during the Central Zone PBB delegates’ conference at the Sibu Indoor Stadium today.

“Alhamdulillah,” he said, smiling as over 2,700 delegates present at the event responded with a resounding ‘no’ to his question.

Abang Johari, who is also the Premier of Sarawak, stressed the importance of the party’s leadership, including the Women and Youth wings, in looking ahead and focusing on the future of Sarawak’s people.

“While we celebrate our achievements, we must also prepare for what lies ahead. That’s why we’ve agreed to establish PBB Youth, who will carry forward our successes and adapt to a changing landscape,” he said.

He added that PBB’s top leadership has a duty to ensure a secure and prosperous future for the people of Sarawak.

Abang Johari also shared his vision of leaving behind a legacy of young, skilled Bumiputera leaders excelling in science and emerging fields.

The conference, which involved 24 PBB branches from Sarawak's Central Zone, saw 15 resolutions passed.

Key among these resolutions was unanimous support for Abang Johari to continue leading PBB and the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition to ensure political stability in Sarawak and Malaysia.

It was also agreed that there would be no contest for the party presidency and vice-presidential positions during PBB’s 16th Convention in Kuching on Feb 14.
