Sarawak Approves 17 Road Projects For Sibu Division

SIBU, Jan 11 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak government has approved 17 road construction projects worth RM826 million in the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) for Sibu Division, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

Nine of the projects are funded with the people’s project allocation worth RM756,545,540, two projects are funded with alternative financing while the other six projects are funded with allocations under the 12MP.

“The Public Works Department has completed three projects worth RM156 million and another is under construction. Tenders for the remaining 13 projects worth RM570 million will be floated this year,” he said in Kemuyang today during a ground-breaking ceremony for the new Jalan Teku Pasai Siong-Kemuyang road project.

Uggah, who is also the Sarawak Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD), said that in addition to the Rural Transformation Project (RTP), Sibu Division has 719 projects worth RM159 million.

A total of 544 of the projects have been completed, 31 are still under construction and 144 are still at the tender preparation stage.

The groundbreaking ceremony in Kemuyang was officiated by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Uggah subsequently expressed his gratitude to Abang Johari for providing the much-awaited impetus in development for the people of Sibu.

He also reiterated that infrastructure development is the backbone of progress and the projects being implemented are in line with the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

He added that cooperation and transparency are key to the success of the said projects which involve active participation from government agencies, local communities, and stakeholders in ensuring transparency and accountability are adhered to in the project cycle.

“With better connectivity, farmers, traders and small businesses will enjoy increased benefits, attract investments, create jobs, and ultimately contribute to economic growth in Sibu Division,” he added.
