US Capitol Flags To Fly At Full Height For Trump's Inauguration

WASHINGTON, Jan 15 (Bernama-dpa) -- The flags at the US Capitol are to be raised to their full height for Donald Trump's inauguration as US president on Jan 20, Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson announced on Tuesday, reported German news agency (dpa). 

The following day, they will be lowered again to half-mast to continue honouring former US president Jimmy Carter during the ongoing 30-day mourning period, he added. 

Carter, who was in office from 1977 to 1981, died on Dec 29 at the age of 100.

Trump expressed annoyance shortly after Carter's death at the possibility that the flags would remain at half-mast during his inauguration. 

"The Democrats are all 'giddy' about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at 'half mast' during my Inauguration," he wrote on his Truth Social platform.

"They think it's so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our country, they only think about themselves," he continued.

Despite his criticism, Trump paid tribute to Carter, visiting his coffin at the Capitol last week and attending his state funeral.
