KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16 (Bernama) -- Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are urged to adopt eco-friendly practices, invest in green technologies and integrate renewable energy (RE) into their operations, enabling them to drive innovation in sustainable mobility.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said OEMs embracing sustainability in vehicle design, production, and beyond not only contribute to environmental preservation but also help build a future-ready ecosystem that thrives in the competitive global market.

“As chair of ASEAN in 2025, Malaysia is poised to champion renewable energy transitions as a regional priority.

“This collective effort further underscores our commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,” he said at the launch of Malaysia Car of the Year (MCOTY) Awards 2024 here today.

“Together, we can propel Malaysia to the forefront of the global automotive industry, paving the way for a future that is green, innovative and inclusive,” he added.

This year’s top honour, the Overall Car of the Year, was awarded to the BYD Seal Premium (Extended Range), marking a historic moment as the first time an electric vehicle (EV) has won this prestigious accolade.

Meanwhile, Proton S70 1.5 Flagship won the Best Value for Money Car award; Perodua won the Best Selling Car Brand in Malaysia award and Perodua Bezza won the Most Energy Efficient Vehicle award.

The event organised by Mobility Media and co-organised by the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics, and IoT Institute (MARii), showcased vehicles and individuals that set new benchmarks for the industry.

MARii chief executive officer Azrul Reza Aziz said the awards highlighted sustainability, safety, and mobility innovations, reaffirming its commitment to building a competitive, eco-friendly and globally recognised automotive industry.
