JOHOR BAHRU, Jan 19 (Bernama) -- The remains of two family members who died in a fire in Kampung Dato Bentara, Jalan Limau Manis, Ulu Tiram last Friday were cremated at Nirvana Memorial Park here today.

Earlier, family and friends paid their last respects to Ng Geok Choo, 63, and her son, Lee Chiw Yong, 30, at the Ulu Tiram Mortuary before their bodies were taken to Nirvana Memorial Park at 1.15 pm.

Lee’s friend, Tan Kok Wei, 37, expressed his sorrow over the passing of his friend, who had worked with him for three years as a furniture maker in Singapore.

He remembered the late Lee as a cheerful soul, a dedicated worker and well-liked by many.

“I couldn't believe it when I heard the news of Lee's death, along with his mother and nephew.

“He was a good son and friend, always hardworking. A few days before the incident, he came to work, and he was his usual self, cheerful and lively,” he told reporters when met at the Ulu Tiram Mortuary here today.

Tan also shared that the late Lee was actively involved in helping others through a non-governmental organisation known as the Johor State Merchant Sports and Recreation Club.

According to Johor Jaya Fire and Rescue Station operation commander Senior Fire Officer II Rafie Ahmad Sareng, the 2.40 am blaze claimed the lives of three victims, who suffered severe burns.
