MACHANG, Jan 19 (Bernama) — The Ministry of National Unity has allocated RM20 million to the Department of National Unity and Integration (JPNIN) to modernise and upgrade 300 Neighbourhood Watch (KRTs) to the status of Progressive KRTs this year.
JPNIN director-general, Datuk Che Roslan Che Daud said there are 8,529 KRTs nationwide, and from this number, 300 KRTs will be selected for upgrading this year.
"Last year, we modernised and upgraded 152 KRTs to the Progressive KRT status. This year, we aim to upgrade 300 more KRTs with this RM20 million allocation.
"Progressive KRTs must meet certain requirements, including having economic and livelihood projects, as well as implementing the Volunteer Patrol Scheme (SRS)," he toLD reporters after the JPNIN Director-General's Message Ceremony here today.
He added that this initiative is crucial as the economic projects developed by Progressive KRTs can generate income for the community, thereby helping to increase household income.
Che Roslan said that the economic projects under the Progressive KRTs cover three main sectors: agriculture, products, and services.
"Each project developed to obtain Progressive KRT status cannot exceed a cost of RM100,000. The selection of KRTs to be upgraded is made based on proposals from the respective state Unity Departments," he said.
He added that the federal government, through the ministry, has allocated RM5 million to improve and upgrade the facilities of Unity Pre-Schools (Tabika) and Unity Child Care Centres (Taska) nationwide this year.
"This allocation will be distributed after March, once the respective state directors complete the scope of work to improve and upgrade the facilities of Tabika and Taska that require care.
"Furthermore, there is also an allocation of RM2 million to repair other facilities, including minor damages caused by the recent floods," he added.
