JAKARTA, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- A landslide in Pekalongan, Central Java, has killed at least 16 people and left three missing, according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

The landslide struck Kasimpar village, Petungkriyono, at 5.30 pm local time on Monday, burying two houses, destroying two bridges, and sweeping away several vehicles.

“Search efforts are ongoing today, with a joint rescue team working to locate the missing, while 10 people have been injured and taken to nearby clinics and hospitals,” said BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari in a statement.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecast light to moderate rain in Pekalongan over the next three days, which could trigger more floods, flash floods, and landslides.

BNPB has urged residents, particularly those living near slopes and cliffs, to stay vigilant, monitor ground conditions regularly, and evacuate if heavy rain continues for two hours or more.
