BUKIT MERTAJAM, Jan 24 (Bernama) -- The Penang state government has approved an allocation of RM360,000 to be distributed among 36 active volunteer fire brigades across the state.

Local Government and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman H’ng Mooi Ly said each fire brigade would receive RM10,000 as the state government’s token of appreciation for their contributions to the community, particularly during emergencies.

“The volunteer fire service prioritise the community’s safety and welfare above their own and are committed to being on the frontline to assist in any situation.

“In recognition and appreciation of their hard work, I requested special funding from Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow last November, which was approved,” he said at the ceremony to present cheques of the allocation to the volunteer fire brigades at the Seberang Perai City Council in Bandar Perda, today.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Endi Sherimi Mohd Azmi and secretary of the Local Government Division, Penang State Secretary Office Muhamad Husni Mahmud, were also present.

H’ng said he hoped that the allocation would help to lighten their burden in carrying out activities and other related matters, adding that the state government will continue to empower the volunteer fire teams and ensure they continue to serve Penangites.
