Karateka Arif Fractures Ankle In Accident, Now Facing Two Surgeries

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 (Bernama) -- Muhammad Arif Afifuddin Ab Malik, the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games men’s karate gold medallist, fractured his right ankle in a motorcycle accident near Jalan Ampang on Monday (Jan 20).

The exponent, who won the gold medal in the men’s kumite (combat) Under-84kg event, has already been grappling with an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) knee injury since September and was waiting for surgery next month, a schedule now complicated by this accident.

“I was hit by a car and admitted to the hospital with an ankle injury. Now I am waiting for the swelling in my leg to go down before facing ankle and ACL surgery together.

“I did my first (bone grafting) surgery in November and am supposed to undergo ACL surgery in February, but (now that I am) caught out with this accident. The ankle surgery might take around three to four months to recover, while ACL might take six to nine months, or even longer because I’m having two issues now,” he said when contacted.

Earlier, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Malaysian Athlete Career and Education (MACE) secretariat head Datuk Shalin Zulkifli and National Sports Institute Sports Medicine director Dr Kamarul Hashimy Hussein visited him.

Muhammad Arif Afifuddin became the Asian Games champion by defeating 2021 World Championship bronze medallist Daniyar Yuldashev of Kazakhstan 10-4 in the final.
