Canada to Impose 25 Per Cent Retaliatory Tariffs On US Imports

02/02/2025 12:39 PM

WASHINGTON, Feb 2 (Bernama-dpa) -- Canada will introduce tariffs of 25 per cent on imports from the United States in retaliation to US tariffs, reported German news agency (dpa).

On Saturday, US President Donald Trump signed off tariffs of 25 per cent on goods from Mexico and Canada, along with a 10 per cent tariff on Chinese products. Energy resources from Canada will have a lower 10 per cent tariff.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the country would introduce matching 25 per cent tariffs on up to US$155 billion in imports from the US.

The actions taken by the White House "split us apart instead of bringing us together", Trudeau told a press conference.

"If President Trump wants to usher in a new golden age for the United States, the better path is to partner with Canada, not to punish us."

The White House said the tariffs were in response to the three countries allowing illegal drugs to enter the US.
