KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 2 (Bernama) -- As Kuala Lumpur (KL) marks its 51st Federal Territory Day, the public is reminded to reflect on the capital's progress and to continue working towards making the city a more inclusive, sustainable and liveable place for all.

Alliance for a Safe Community Chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said that KL must not only be a hub of economic growth and development but also a city that prioritises the well-being of its people, the environment and future generations.

"A truly inclusive KL is one where every resident, regardless of age, background or ability, has equal access to opportunities and services," he said in a statement today.

In this regard, he emphasised the need to ensure affordable housing and improved urban planning to prevent socio-economic segregation, while also improving accessibility for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in public spaces and transportation.

Lee said it is important to promote multicultural harmony by fostering social cohesion through community-driven initiatives and policies that reflect KL’s diversity.

He also called for strengthening the role of Kuala Lumpur City Hall in decision-making processes to ensure that the voices of residents are heard and considered in city planning.

On the issue of sustainability, Lee said the city must focus on expanding and maintaining green spaces such as parks and urban forests to improve air quality and provide recreational areas for residents.

He further called for the enhancement of public transport to reduce congestion and carbon emissions, including better first-mile and last-mile connectivity, and at the same time stressed the importance of implementing stronger policies to reduce waste, encourage recycling and transition towards a circular economy.

Lee added that strengthening climate resilience by addressing flash floods, preserving flood retention ponds, improving drainage systems and promoting eco-friendly urban designs is essential for the city's future sustainability.

For liveability, he said that improving daily life for KL residents should be a top priority and this includes reducing traffic congestion through better public transport and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.

He also outlined the importance of strengthening safety and security through better street lighting, crime prevention programs, and community policing initiatives, and there's also a need to promote a vibrant cultural and creative economy, support local businesses, preserve heritage and expand public arts initiatives.

Investing in safety, health and wellness by ensuring better public healthcare facilities, mental health support and promoting active lifestyles was also a key aspect in achieving a more liveable KL.
