Busker In Spiderman Garb Grabs Attention Of Passers-by, Netizens

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13 (Bernama) -- His favourite busking spots are the Saturday morning market in Padang Serai and a supermarket in Kulim, Kedah. It is hard for passers-by to miss him as not only is his voice melodious but he would turn up dressed as Spider-Man.

The 34-year-old singer, who only wanted to be identified as Roy, has also managed to capture the attention of netizens with his unique performance style, to the point that some would eagerly anticipate the latest videos of his street performances on TikTok.

Roy, who is from Kampung Selamat in Tasek Gelugor, Penang, said when he first started busking about 15 years ago, he performed with a group but in 2023, he went solo.  

“After frequently sharing videos of me singing on TikTok starting July last year, my followers increased because some of my videos made it to (TikTok’s) FYP (For Your Page, where popular videos are presented).

“From there, more people began to recognise and take an interest in my busking style. Now I’m getting opportunities to perform at events such as weddings, and I can say my weekends are fully booked until July,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

Roy, who works as a technician, said he chose to dress up as Spider-Man as he has been a fan of the superhero since childhood. He owns 15 sets of the Spider-Man costume. 

“Wearing the complete (Spider-Man) costume is quite troublesome because it takes me longer to get ready at a venue, especially since I also wear an inner shirt, which can be uncomfortable and make me sweat.

“But after a while, I got used to it and it became comfortable. While my intention is to entertain adults, wearing a Spiderman costume is also an easy way to attract children’s attention. At the very least, they can take pictures with me,” he said.

Regarding his future plans, Roy said he has no intention of becoming a professional singer as he sings “just for fun and personal satisfaction”.

“Although I receive positive responses from netizens who think I have the potential to become a famous singer, I know my vocal capability.

“Busking is just a hobby, plus I already have a permanent job, so I am more comfortable with things as they are now,” added Roy, who enjoys performing rock songs from the 90s era.
