Integrity, Professionalism Key To Shielding Civil Servants From Social Media Negativity - Hajiji

KOTA KINABALU, Feb 20 (Bernama) -- Integrity and professionalism among civil servants are crucial in preventing them from falling victim to negativity on social media, particularly irresponsible viral content.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said that in today’s digital age, the performance of civil servants is constantly under public scrutiny. Any dissatisfaction can quickly escalate, with videos, photos, or stories going viral on social media.

Therefore, he stressed that upholding integrity and professionalism is essential, not only to provide the best service to the people but also to counter social media criticism with the truth.

“Civil servants are just like politicians (constantly under scrutiny). CCTV (closed circuit television) cameras are everywhere, we must remain vigilant in carrying out our duties and fulfilling our responsibilities.

“The digital era is dominated by recording technology - every action is documented, often without our knowledge. Privacy invasion is becoming more widespread, but this is the reality of modern life. It is better to remain vigilant than to risk public disgrace,” he said today.

Hajiji said this when delivering the New Year's mandate for the state civil servants here which was also attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan and Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong, and Sabah Federal Secretary Datuk Seri Rosli Isa.

He expressed concern over the growing influence of social media, lamenting that society tends to gravitate toward sensationalism, slander, and conflict rather than focusing on crucial issues such as religion, the economy, and national unity - key elements in fostering the country's prosperity.

Hajiji also noted that advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have created opportunities for irresponsible individuals to manipulate technology for malicious purposes, including spreading misinformation and slander.

Therefore, he urged all parties to harness digital advancements - particularly the internet, social media, and AI - for positive development, benefiting both the people and the nation, rather than using them as platforms for falsehoods.

“Technology, if misused, can threaten harmony. Civil servants, in particular, must remain vigilant, as 21st-century technological advancements have the power to reshape lives,” he said.
