JAKARTA, Feb 21 (Bernama) -- ASEAN secretary-general Dr Kao Kim Hourn highlighted the importance of Australia’s unwavering commitment to regional development, especially amid shifting global aid priorities following the Trump administration’s freeze on United States foreign assistance.
Speaking at the launch of the Australia-Southeast Asia Regional Development Partnership Plan (DPP) 2024-2028, he emphasised Australia’s role as a stabilising force amid growing uncertainties in international development assistance.
“This demonstrates not only Australia’s reliability as a partner but also its strategic foresight in recognising that consistent, predictable assistance is crucial for long-term regional peace, stability, and prosperity,” he said.
Held on the sidelines of the 37th ASEAN-Australia Forum at the ASEAN Headquarters on Thursday, the ceremony reflects the outcomes of last year’s Special Summit in Melbourne, which celebrated the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN-Australia relations, according to the ASEAN Secretariat.
Kao emphasised that the timely launch of the DPP 2024-2028 would ensure vital initiatives across Southeast Asia continue without disruption, helping maintain momentum despite the uncertainties in global development aid.
The partnership plan brings to life shared priorities under the ASEAN-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, focusing on inclusive and sustainable economic growth, tackling climate change and energy transition, empowering women and girls, advancing disability and social inclusion, and building resilience across Southeast Asia.
“The DPP reflects Australia’s unwavering commitment and comprehensive approach to development, aimed at enhancing the region’s economic, social, and environmental resilience,” he noted.
With Australia allocating AUD 1.3 billion (US$832.2 million) annually in official development assistance to Southeast Asia, the DPP is backed by substantial resources, strategically directed to areas of greatest need, ensuring tangible outcomes and lasting impact for the people of the region, he added.
