KUALA LUMPUR, 21 Feb (Bernama) -- A symposium on empowering the Malay language in the legal field will be held this Feb 27 at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP).

DBP Director-General Dr. Hazami Jahari said the symposium, organised by the agency, will serve as a platform to discuss various aspects of using the national language in legal contexts, particularly in the courts.

"That is why we are bringing together various stakeholders, including the Department of Justice, academics, and legal practitioners, to explore how the Malay language can be effectively utilised in this sector," he said after an interview with Bernama Radio in conjunction with the 2025 International Mother Language Day celebration today.

He added that DBP, through the Current Terminology Committee, remains committed to strengthening the use of the Malay language across various sectors, with a particular focus on developing new terms that align with the latest developments.

"When questions arise regarding newly introduced terms, this committee is responsible for determining the most accurate terminology, particularly in fields such as medicine, engineering, and artificial intelligence (AI).

"In the process of term formation, our experts collaborate with specialists in the relevant fields. We convene twice a month to develop terms requested by external parties or in response to emerging fields in the country," he said.

Speaking about the International Mother Language Day 2025 celebration today, he said, it serves as an important reminder for the community to appreciate and actively preserve the use of their mother tongue in daily life.

Observed annually on February 21, International Mother Language Day celebrates linguistic and cultural diversity worldwide.
