01/03/2025 06:37 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (KPK) aims to achieve RM14 billion in wooden furniture exports, accounting for 50 per cent of Malaysia’s RM28 billion timber export target by 2025.

Deputy Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin expressed confidence in reaching the goal, noting that Malaysia’s wooden furniture exports totalled RM9.9 billion last year.

"That’s why the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) is very important in providing a platform for business opportunities, ensuring that every participant benefits,” he told reporters after officiating MIFF today.

Malaysia is working towards the RM28 billion timber export target set under the National Agricommodity Policy 2030.

In 2024, Malaysia’s timber product exports reached RM22.9 billion, while wooden furniture exports stood at RM9.9 billion, reflecting an 8.4 per cent increase from the previous year.

The timber industry remains the third-largest contributor to the country’s commodity exports.

MIFF chairman and founder Datuk Tan Chin Huat said the fair aims for at least a five per cent increase in on-site sales compared to last year’s US$1.28 billion. (US$1 = RM4.46).

“Looking at this morning's response, I'm quite optimistic. I see a lot of new faces. It looks like people are coming back to buy… MIFF is not only a trade show; we put in a lot of effort, working together with the industry.

“We also organised and sponsored various activities, such as design competitions to nurture young designers from Malaysia. We also showcased design concepts here at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) and World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL). On the other hand, we work towards environmental sustainability,” he said.

Tan highlighted that a key sustainability feature at MIFF 2025 is Panasonic Housing Solutions’ Palm Loop technology from Japan, which enables furniture manufacturers to produce high-quality materials from oil palm trunks.

Leading exhibitors embracing this sustainable solution include Shantawood, Panelbase System Industries, Synergy Wood Products, Distinctive Fine Furniture, Estay Furniture, SLK Furniture Design, Sincerity Furniture, and Yeu Hong Furniture Industries.

MIFF 2025 showcases cutting-edge design, innovation, and sustainability, featuring 742 exhibitors from 12 countries and regions.

The event is expected to attract 20,000 visitors from over 140 countries.

Spanning 100,000 square metres across MITEC and WTCKL, MIFF hosts key industry players from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan, China, South Korea, Taiwan, India, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States
