JAKARTA, March 7 (Bernama) -- One person was killed, and seven others remain missing after floods and landslides, triggered by extreme weather, struck Sukabumi Regency in West Java, local authorities said.
According to the Sukabumi Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), at least 116 households, comprising 204 people, were affected, with 159 people forced to evacuate on Thursday and Friday.
“The disasters, caused by prolonged heavy rain, affected 18 districts, including Simpenan, Lengkong, and Palabuhanratu, where most casualties were recorded,” said BPBD Operations Control Centre head, Daeng Sutisna, in a statement.
He confirmed that the fatality was reported in Simpenan, while the missing include two people from Simpenan, three from Lengkong, and two from Palabuhanratu.
The material damage includes 10 houses, five of which were severely damaged, along with flooding affecting 120 houses and 12 public and social facilities.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with BPBD coordinating with multiple agencies to locate the missing and assess the damage.
Sutisna urged residents to remain vigilant as extreme weather may persist.
