KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 (Bernama) -- The Cabinet has been called to consider and approve the establishment of the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM) as the main regulatory body to ensure the gig economy ecosystem develops sustainably.
This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in a statement today after chairing the committee meeting for the first time this year, to refine the direction and main strategies in strengthening the country's gig industry.
Ahmad Zahid who is also the chairman of the High Level Committee (HLC) for the establishment of SEGiM, said the commission would focus on critical components in the gig economy model and aspects that require regulation.
"SEGiM will play an important role in balancing the interests of platform providers, gig workers, consumers, and all stakeholders, ensuring their rights are protected through transparent policy enforcement, monitoring service standards, and empowering self-regulation in the gig industry.
“This move will also promote more sustainable, progressive and competitive industry standards to adapt to the rapidly evolving digital economy landscape,” he said.
Ahmad Zahid said this effort was in line with the government’s desire to draft a holistic and inclusive bill, taking into account the views of all stakeholders including industry players and millions of gig workers who depend on the digital economy as their source of income.
He said the basis for the establishment of SEGiM, which was provided by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) through the Digital Ministry, was also refined at today’s meeting.
In addition, he said the government had taken note of MDEC’s recommendation that the drafting of the constitution for SEGiM be carried out jointly with the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department, after obtaining approval from the Cabinet.
“The government remains committed to strengthening the gig economy sector to ensure the well-being of gig workers and the stability of the country’s digital economy ecosystem.
“This measure not only ensures justice and social protection, but also opens up more opportunities for the people in the era of a dynamic and competitive digital economy,” he said.
