KANGAR, July 15 (Bernama) -- A former enforcement assistant and an assistant architectural officer at a local authority in Perlis have been remanded for seven days from today to assist in the investigation into the case of soliciting and accepting bribes of approximately RM70,000.

According to a source from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the remand order against the 61-year-old recently retired enforcement assistant and the female assistant officer, 37, was issued by Kangar Magistrate’s Court.

The source said the two individuals are suspected of soliciting and accepting bribes of between RM300 and RM9,000 from applicants of house renovation permits as an inducement to ease the approval from the local authority between 2022 and 2024, with a total transaction estimated at around RM70,000.

“The two suspects are believed to have received the bribes from the applicants through money transfer transactions to the male suspect’s personal bank account, which was later shared with the female suspect,” the source said today.

Meanwhile, Perlis MACC director Mohd Nor Adha Ab Gani, when contacted, confirmed the arrest and said the case was being investigated under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act 2009.
