Over RM100,000 For Drainage Upgrade To End Flooding In Kampung Chetti

MELAKA, Oct 12 (Bernama) -- Kampung Chetti in Jalan Gajah Berang here has received an allocation of more than RM100,000 from the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) to upgrade its drainage system and several facilities.

Kota Melaka Member of Parliament (MP) Khoo Poay Tiong said the project, aimed at resolving recurring flash floods in the area, is expected to begin after the Deepavali celebration.

“Flash floods have long been an issue in Kampung Chetti due to an outdated drainage system. The upgrade will provide a lasting solution.

“As the Kota Melaka MP, I would like to thank Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming for approving the allocation,” he told reporters today after the Deepavali Festive Charity: Together for a Better Tomorrow event, attended by more than 200 members of the Chetti community.

He said the allocation will also cover road resurfacing outside the community hall to support more social and cultural activities.

In conjunction with the festival of lights, Khoo also contributed RM10,000 to the Sri Muthu Mariamman Temple in the village under his parliamentary allocation.

On a separate matter, he urged the government, particularly Petronas Gas Bhd, to conduct regular inspections of underground gas pipelines in Taman Merdeka as a precautionary measure following the gas explosion incident in Putra Heights, Selangor, last April.

Khoo said Taman Merdeka, located within the Kota Melaka constituency, is among the state’s largest residential and industrial areas, and could pose safety risks to residents if not properly maintained.

“The pipelines were installed about eight years ago, and the Putra Heights incident has understandably caused concern among residents. Regular inspections are crucial to prevent any untoward incidents,” he said.
