KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- After seven years without releasing an Indonesian-language album, popular singer Afgan has returned to the pop roots that shaped his identity through his latest single titled Kacamata.

The song serves as the opening track of his seventh album Retrospektif, scheduled for release this November, marking Afgan’s journey back to the musical style that first introduced his name nearly two decades ago.

Afgan, whose full name is Afgansyah Reza, 36, said Kacamata retains the pop identity synonymous with him, but enriched with modern R&B elements and more contemporary music production.

Interestingly, the song also highlights the guitar as its main element, in contrast to most of Afgan’s previous works, which leaned more on piano and orchestral arrangements.

Kacamata really represents that era. For 15 years, I’ve been known for my glasses and pop songs, so symbolically this single is the perfect way to launch my new album,” he said in a statement.

Afgan added that beyond symbolising his musical journey, Kacamata also carries a profound message.

“Don’t put too much hope in people, because the only one we can truly rely on is God. This song is a reminder not to lose ourselves when facing disappointment.

“With its light rhythm and easy-to-remember lyrics, Kacamata brings a sense of positivity, making listeners smile in the midst of turmoil, reminding them that life isn’t always heavy, and inviting us to embrace every phase of life,” he said.

Afgan also collaborated with three talented musicians — Iqbal Siregar, Petra Sihombing, and Kamga Mohammed — in the creative process of the song.

“The recording process was fast yet well-organised. The vocal session was completed in half a day, while the entire production, including mixing and mastering, was wrapped up in about two months,” he explained.

The music video, directed by Shadtoto Prasetio, showcases a nostalgic 90s-inspired visual style blended with modern minimalism, featuring Afgan alongside actress Yuki Kato in a chess game symbolising a love journey filled with strategy and sacrifice.

Kacamata has been available on all digital streaming platforms since Oct 10.
