TASHKENT, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- The launch of AirAsia X’s inaugural direct flight between Kuala Lumpur and Tashkent has opened a new gateway between Southeast Asia and Central Asia, strengthening Malaysia-Uzbekistan ties and paving the way for expanded cooperation in tourism, trade and education.
AirAsia X Chief Executive Officer Benyamin Ismail said the new route is set to serve as a catalyst for stronger two-way connectivity, particularly benefiting students, entrepreneurs and travellers from both countries.
“At present, there are thousands of Uzbek students studying in Malaysia. With this direct route, travel becomes easier, and it has the potential to further enhance cooperation in education and trade,” he told reporters after the official launch of AirAsia X’s flight from Kuala Lumpur to Tashkent at Terminal 2, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA2) on Wednesday.
Also present was Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Malaysia, Dr. Karomidin Gadoev.
The inaugural flight departed from KLIA2 at 1.20 pm (Wednesday) and arrived at Islam Karimov International Airport in Tashkent after more than seven hours of non-stop travel, carrying 200 passengers—including representatives from Malaysian travel agencies and nine media personnel.
Benyamin said AirAsia X also sees strong potential in the cargo segment, particularly for halal food and light goods, as the direct route is expected to reduce reliance on transit hubs and shorten delivery times.
“At present, there is only one Uzbek restaurant in Malaysia, but we believe demand for food and products from Uzbekistan will increase with the introduction of this route,” he said.
AirAsia X has commenced operations to Tashkent with three weekly flights and plans to increase the frequency to four per week by early next year, subject to market demand.
The airline officially entered the Central Asian market in March last year with the launch of its direct service to Almaty, Kazakhstan.
It is now set to introduce its maiden route to Istanbul on Nov 14, as part of a broader strategy to expand its network across Central Asia and Europe.
