ASEAN Summit Road Closures To Be In Stages, Not For 24 Hours - Fahmi

17/10/2025 06:42 PM

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- Roads will be closed in stages and only at specific times during the 47th ASEAN Summit, not for 24 hours or in a full lockdown, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

The MADANI Government spokesman said the closures would only take place at specific times, particularly during the arrival of visiting leaders, involving routes from Bunga Raya Complex at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Subang Air Base to the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), the summit venue, or to their respective accommodation.

“It’s not a lockdown, and it’s not a permanent closure. For example, if a head of state is travelling from the airport to Kuala Lumpur, the route will be closed temporarily.

“Once the convoy has passed, the route will be reopened. So, the closure is not 24 hours, and it’s certainly not a lockdown,” he told a press conference here today.

He advised members of the public to plan their journeys and follow official traffic advisories to ensure smooth travel throughout the summit period.

Yesterday, Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said six major highways and 25 major roads across the Klang Valley will be gradually diverted in conjunction with the 47th ASEAN Summit, which is set to take place from Oct 26 to 28.

The affected highways include the North-South Expressway Central Link (ELITE), New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE), Guthrie Corridor Expressway, North-South Expressway, MEX Highway, and KL-Seremban Expressway.

Among the roads affected are the Lebuh KLIA, Putrajaya Ring Road, as well as several major roads in the city, such as Jalan Istana, Jalan Damansara, Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Parlimen, and Jalan Kuching.

The 47th ASEAN Summit marks the culmination of Malaysia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025, under the theme ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’.

Among the world leaders expected to attend are United States President Donald Trump, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Meanwhile, Fahmi said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his appreciation to enforcement agencies for their firm action against corruption and smuggling cartels, resulting in the recovery of about RM15.5 billion over the past two years.

The agencies include the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Royal Malaysian Customs Department and the Control and Border Protection Agency.

“This proves that stricter enforcement by the relevant agencies can help reduce leakages and criminal activities that cause losses to the country,” he said.
