GEORGE TOWN, Oct 17 (Bernama) — Former Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Vice-Chancellor Tan Sri Prof Emeritus Dzulkifli Abdul Razak was injured in the head after being assaulted by unknown assailants who robbed him near his residence in Taman Pekaka at dawn here today.
According to Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) in a post on its official Facebook page, the robbery occurred when Dzulkifli was returning home after performing the Subuh prayers.
The post also stated that the former rector of the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) suffered a head injury and received 15 stitches after he was pistol whipped by the suspect.
Meanwhile, according to a statement from a family member shared by UUM in the comments section, Dzulkifli was otherwise safe and well from the trauma of the incident.
Family members also said they will share further information after the police investigation is completed, besides expressing gratitude for the concern of all parties.
Meanwhile, Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail when contacted by Bernama, confirmed the robbery that occurred in Taman Pekaka.
He said that police have so far arrested a male suspect to assist in the investigation of the case and the suspect will be brought to court tomorrow to obtain a remand order.
"The operations room of the Northeast (district) Police Headquarters received a call at 7.01 am to inform of the robbery at 6.45 am, where a 75-year-old victim suffered a head injury.
"Following the incident, police arrested a man here for investigations, to identify the motive for the robbery and to identify the weapon used by the suspect," he said.
