KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 (Bernama) -- The police are fully prepared to carry out security duties for the heads of state and delegations attending the 47th ASEAN Summit in the federal capital to ensure the event runs smoothly.
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (Operations/Movement) deputy director Datuk Fisol Salleh said they have categorised the delegates into high-risk and normal-risk groups, with different security approaches to be implemented.
"These security duties will be conducted by all our personnel, whether from the Special Actions Unit (UTK), Special Branch or any other related units, who have all undergone specific training.
"Over 10,000 personnel involved in this assignment have reported for duty and will begin their duties at their respective locations within the next day or two,” he told reporters after the duty briefing session in conjunction with the summit at the Old Airport Hangar in Bandar Malaysia here today.
Also present at the briefing were Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus and other police personnel who will be involved in carrying out security duties during the summit.
Fisol said that international leaders and delegations scheduled to attend the summit, including those from major powers like the United States (US), China and India, will be placed at 24 hotels around the capital.
He added that to ensure the smooth running of security operations, police will be deploying new assets, including security vehicles obtained from the General Operations Force (GOF), to escort delegations from high-risk countries.
Meanwhile, Fisol advised the public, especially motorists, to fully cooperate with the police throughout the security control operation period.
"Traffic police will provide updates from time to time. This is not a total lockdown, but an enhanced security deployment. I urge all road users to give their full cooperation,” he said.
The 47th ASEAN Summit, themed "Inclusivity and Sustainability”, is scheduled to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from Aug 26-28, with the participation of all 10 leaders of ASEAN member states along with dialogue partners and guests, including from the US, China, Japan and India.
