BANGKOK, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- Thailand is finalising a peace agreement with Cambodia to resolve the ongoing border dispute, with a joint declaration expected to be signed on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur.

Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura said the details of the agreement are still being drafted and that the process is proceeding as planned.

“What I can say right now is that the agreement will ensure both parties commit to the ceasefire, refrain from any further provocations, and adhere to previously agreed arrangements,” he told a media briefing on Friday.

Earlier, four-party consultations involving the United States, Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia were held on Oct 12 and 17 in Kuala Lumpur, aimed at restoring bilateral relations between Thailand and Cambodia.

However, Nikorndej – who is also the Director-General of the Department of Information – emphasised that discussions on the agreement were essentially bilateral negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia.

He added that the existing bilateral mechanisms continued to function effectively, producing tangible results, progress, and concrete developments.

“Thailand sincerely hopes that both sides will continue to engage in negotiations with sincerity and good faith, which will help foster a conducive environment for restoring normalised relations,” he said.

On Thursday, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was reported as saying that the final signing of the agreement between Thailand and Cambodia would be witnessed by him and United States President Donald Trump.

Tensions between the two neighbours over their 817-kilometre border escalated into a military confrontation in late July. Fighting came to an abrupt halt following a ceasefire agreement brokered by Malaysia, in its capacity as ASEAN Chair, in Putrajaya on July 28.
