KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- Living up to Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship theme of ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’, the Malaysian Federation of the Deaf (MFD) choir will once again be featured on the ASEAN grand stage this Sunday to perform the ASEAN anthem, the ASEAN Way.
This time around, the 18-member group, comprising hearing-impaired children and teenagers, will perform at the opening ceremony of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, alongside the Young KL Singers choir, expressing the anthem through sign language.
The MFD choir first performed at the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) in July, and has since become a symbol of inclusion and accessibility in regional events.
Accompanying teacher Helen Lau said the students were deeply honoured and excited to perform on such a prominent stage and had practised tirelessly to ensure a flawless presentation.
“We feel proud to have this opportunity to participate in an event like this. It took us three days to practice. There was also a bit of a challenge because we had to follow the rhythm of the music, which is where the teacher who is not deaf would help us,” she said through interpreter Wan Zuraidah Abu when met after the opening ceremony rehearsal at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, here today.
Another accompanying teacher, Wong Chai Sin, said the performance not only reflects Malaysia’s commitment to inclusivity but also helps instil soft skills and confidence among the young performers.
“This opportunity helps them build confidence and gain exposure,” Wong said.
Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair for 2025, will host the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits from Oct 26 to 28, bringing together leaders from the 10 ASEAN member states and key dialogue partners, including the United States, China, Japan, and India.
