JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- The Johor Heritage Foundation (YWJ) has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Johor Bahru and the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) in Singapore to enhance regional cooperation and strengthen the network of cultural diplomacy and heritage arts.
Its director, Nor Syazlan Abd Razak said the MoU was signed in conjunction with the Wonderful Nusantara Festival (WNF) 2025, now in its third edition.
He said the collaboration demonstrates Johor's role as an essential hub promoting cultural exchange, performing arts, and heritage-based tourism in the region.
"Through WNF, we can highlight the rich diversity of the cultures and arts of Johor and the Nusantara, demonstrating that we don't need to travel far to experience the uniqueness of these two regions," he told reporters during the MoU signing ceremony and the WNF 2025 press conference held here today.
The MoU was signed by Nor Syazlan together with Sigit S. Widiyanto, Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Johor Bahru, and Singapore MHC general manager Mohamed Hafiz Mohamed Shariff.
Nor Syazlan said this year's WNF features new participation from Thailand, represented by the Bunditpatanasilpa Institute of Thailand, as well as the Sarawak Arts Council.
He said the festival, which began yesterday, will continue until Sunday at the Sultan Abu Bakar Heritage Complex, featuring a variety of artistic activities, cultural performances, exhibitions and Nusantara gastronomy.
Highlights include the Cultural Pavilion Exhibition showcasing heritage and art, Live Cultural Showcases, interactive activities at Rumah Zapin, Dewata Theatre Performances, the Nusantara Food Festival organised by MaQan Event, and an exclusive performance from Thailand as part of the 3rd Wonderful Nusantara Soirée: A Regal Gala of Radiance.
Nor Syazlan said the festival aims to attract 30,000 visitors, including both local and international audiences, with over 10,000 attendees recorded so far.
He said YWJ is expected to establish collaborations with Brunei and the Philippines next year to strengthen regional cooperation through broader ASEAN participation.
He also said the efforts will establish the festival as an important platform for unity and cultural exchange in the region.
"In line with the Visit Johor Year 2026, this event is expected to become even more vibrant through new collaborative partners.
"This is a very positive sign towards strengthening ties among ASEAN countries," he added.
