Sarawak Targets 10,000 MW Green Energy Output By 2030 — Abang Johari

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 (Bernama) -- Sarawak aims to become the largest green energy producer, targeting to generate 10,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable and green energy by 2030, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He added that Sarawak is very fortunate to have strength in terms of energy, with the Bakun Dam — the largest in the region, initially producing 2,200 MW and now increasing to 2,500 MW due to continuous innovation.

Abang Johari said Sarawak will not stop and will adopt new renewable methods, including utilising its vast potential for solar energy generation and developing new liquid biomass to replace coal.

“And the other way is through the use of low carbon gas, methane and finally, of course, we want to use hydrogen.

“By 2035, we will increase it to 15,000 MW,” he said before starting a town hall session titled Sarawak Agenda on the sidelines of Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak (LBAS) 2025 today.

He emphasised that in any economic activity, the prime mover or main driver is energy, without which progress and economic development would not be possible.

“And energy should have a reasonable cost, an affordable cost in terms of energy production. And with that cost and controlled tariffs, we are able to attract investments. With investments, it will create job opportunities,” he said.
