TAIPING, Oct 25 (Bernama) -- The Perak government will conduct an assessment of infrastructure damaged by floods to support an application for additional funding, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad
He said the results of the assessment would be forwarded to the federal government and the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) for consideration in allocating funds to the state.
"District officers will hold a meeting to review the post-flood scenario of infrastructure that are severely damaged, including collapsed bridges.
"Although it may be difficult to obtain additional funds, NADMA may have special allocations that could assist us," he said after meeting flood victims at the Matang Gelugor temporary evacuation centre (PPS) here today.
Earlier, he visited several PPS and inspected areas in four districts affected by floods since Thursday night, namely Larut Matang Selama, Manjung, Kerian and Central Perak.
Yesterday, the government approved an immediate allocation of RM1.2 million for flood mitigation projects in the LMS district.
Meanwhile, Saarani said all security agencies and technical departments and local authorities have been fully mobilised to carry out rescue operations, provide basic facilities at the PPS and ensure the welfare of victims.
At the same time, he said all department heads had been asked to activate the MADANI Civil Servants Compassion Squad under the coordination of the State Secretary's Office to assist with post-flood clean-up and recovery work.
"This step is important to speed up the post-flood recovery process and ensure that affected areas can be restored promptly," he said.
He also advised residents in high-risk areas to remain vigilant and comply with the authorities' instructions and to avoid activities near rivers, canals and areas prone to flooding.
He said the State Disaster Management Committee, together with all security agencies, will continue to monitor the current situation and ensure that aid is channelled quickly, systematically and comprehensively.
As of 5 pm today, the number of flood victims continued to increase to 2,963 (from 1,006 families) with two more PPS opened in Manjung and Kerian, making a total of 28 PPS currently active.
