KUCHING, Oct 29 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak government has agreed to establish a new Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak campus dedicated to materials science research, which uses the latest technology to analyse and convert raw materials into high-value products.

Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the initiative aligns with the state’s development agenda, particularly in advancing research and innovation across its four development frontiers: energy, hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS), as well as the natural hub through biomass.

“The state government is committed to developing a materials science research centre to strengthen research capacity and nurture local expertise in the field.

“I haven’t approved it yet… (but) 10 acres (4.047 hectares) of land have been identified for the construction of the centre, which will serve as a hub to produce researchers in materials science,” he said during the university’s 25th Anniversary gala dinner here last night.

Abang Johari added that the proposed campus site could be increased to 15 acres (6.07 hectares) if the initial size is inadequate.

Also present at the dinner were Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Swinburne University of Technology vice-chancellor and president Prof Pascale Quester, and Swinburne Sarawak’s Board of Directors chairman, Datuk Amar Jaul Samion.
