KOTA KINABALU, Nov 8 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged federal and state leaders to work with him to elevate Malaysia into a great nation on the global stage.

He said the government is prioritising economic strength to ensure Malaysia commands respect internationally, not only for its security but also for its policies.

“My focus is to ensure the success of this country as a great nation with economic strength. This is crucial. Fundamentally, we are a peaceful country that maintains good relations with all nations.

“Some criticise me for being too close to China or the United States. I do not mind criticism because my priority is Malaysia’s growth and standing. To succeed economically, we must maintain friendships with all,” he added.

Anwar was speaking at the Prime Minister’s meet-and-greet session with the Sabah industry associations here tonight.

Also present were Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz and Minister of Communications Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

Anwar said the recent 47th ASEAN Summit demonstrated Malaysia’s ability to bring together 11 ASEAN member states and major global economic powers such as the United States and China, a feat few nations could achieve.

“Malaysia is an independent nation. I represent this country and my decisions must protect the interests of our people and economy,” he said.

He said peace and stability are vital for business growth and should be ingrained among Malaysians so that they can fully benefit from national progress.

Anwar reiterated that the nation would suffer significant losses if political disputes, either at the federal or state level, affect the people.

“As Prime Minister, I will not tolerate such behaviour. The power entrusted to us must be used to govern responsibly and safeguard our citizens,” he said.

He also urged Sabah’s leadership to work closely with the federal government to ensure the state’s economic development is implemented inclusively and effectively.

Anwar said the focus should shift away from racial politics or state-federal disputes towards strengthening the economy for the people’s benefit.

“I want all leaders to cooperate, represent Sabah’s aspirations and focus on economic progress,” he said, adding that unity between the federal and state governments, along with political stability, is key to driving national growth and prosperity.

He also reminded that business and investment cannot thrive without peace and strong national understanding.
