KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 16 (Bernama) -- Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Syed Sirajuddin, Perlis, emerged as the champion of the secondary school category in the Junior Innovathon 2025 through their innovation: a carbon monoxide gas detection and filter device.

For the primary school category, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Convent Father Barre, Kedah, was crowned champion with their innovation, Bag Me Up. Both champions took home a cash prize of RM40,000 and an iPad.

The prize presentation was officiated by the Second Minister of Finance, who is acting as the Minister of Economy, Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, during the final episode of Junior Innovathon held at Angkasapuri Kota Media, here, today.

Junior Innovathon 2025, which was organised for the first time, aims to unearth innovative talent among students from primary schools, secondary schools, vocational colleges, MARA Junior Science Colleges (MRSM), and private schools.

The programme is an initiative of the Ministry of Economy in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development.

The runner-up in the secondary school category, who took home RM22,000, was Vocational College (KV) Pasir Gudang, Johor, with their innovation Bot Sabut (Coconut Husk Boat), while for the primary school category, the runner-up position went to SK Seri Indera, Perlis, with their innovation Recypot 2.0: Brewed For A Greener Future.

Third place in the secondary school category was won by SMK Taman Jasmin 2, Selangor, with their innovation Ecopolypave 23, while the primary school category was won by SK Padang Mengkuang, Terengganu, with their innovation Rasbela. Both third-place winners received RM15,000.

In addition, the PTPTN Best Innovation Presentation Award was also won by KV Pasir Gudang and SK Methodist Parit Buntar, with each receiving RM2,500 cash.

The representative of the secondary school champion team, Muhammad Iqram Zulfiqqar Idris from SMK Syed Sirajuddin, said the victory was a deeply meaningful achievement as it stemmed from the joint effort of his teammates and the strong support of their teachers and the school.

"We did not expect this innovation to go this far. I hope it (the innovation) does not stop here, but can be developed into actual technology capable of protecting the community in Malaysia and abroad from the risk of carbon monoxide gas poisoning," he said.

Izzhana Ambi Mohd Haniff from SK Convent Father Barre expressed her joy that their efforts have borne success and simultaneously hoped that the innovation produced could benefit students.

"I hope students can reduce the increasingly worrying risk of scoliosis. We also hope this product can help students take better care of their spinal health," she said.
