BAGAN DATUK, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, today proclaimed the Bagan Datuk Polytechnic as Sultan Nazrin Shah Maritime Polytechnic.

The proclamation ceremony was also graced by the attendance of Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, Raja Muda Perak Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa, and Raja Di Hilir Perak Raja Iskandar Dzurkarnain Sultan Idris Shah.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad were also present.

In his opening address, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the institution, the country’s 35th polytechnic, was established in December 2016 with the vision of producing highly skilled talent in maritime engineering and technology.

“Its first intake in 2017, offering the Diploma in Naval Architecture, made it the only TVET (technical and vocational education and training) polytechnic focused specifically on maritime and shipping fields.

“Today, the polytechnic stands proudly on 12.14 hectares of land, developed at a cost of RM175 million and fully completed in 2023,” he said.

Zambry said that the institution is a beacon of knowledge that reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening the nation’s maritime TVET sector.

“Its establishment aligns with the Malaysia MADANI aspirations and the national Blue Economy agenda to enhance ocean sustainability and future maritime technologies,” he added.

During the ceremony, Sultan Nazrin and Tuanku Zara also toured an exhibition showcasing the polytechnic’s history and achievements.
