Membakut Residents Relieved BN Candidate Championing Kg Binsulok Bridge Upgrade

MEMBAKUT, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- Kampung Binsulok residents in Membakut state constituency feel relieved and welcome efforts to upgrade the village’s wooden bridge that they deem is old and hazardous, especially to children and motorcyclists.

Village resident Rahduan Abu Bakar, 47, said the bridge was old and often put users at risk, including children who go back and forth to the grocery shop and religious school.

“The bridge in Kampung Binsulok really is old and in need of repair as the wood has decayed,” he told Bernama recently, adding that the bridge did collapse when a lorry tried to cross it and it took a year to repair.

“So residents from the other side had to use rafts to come over. School children, the elderly, everyone used rafts,” he said.

This was one reason he greatly appreciated Kimanis MP and BN candidate for Bongawan Datuk Mohamad Alamin for his efforts to replace the old bridge with a new one. Both Bongawan and Membakut are in Kimanis parliamentary constituency.

Housewife Hatizah Baktir, 34, related that users had to be careful every time they used the bridge as the wooden structure would sway and only one car could pass at any one time.

“It seems to rock too… you need to let one car pass before I can pass,” she said.

Meanwhile, BN candidate for Membakut, Rusman Dulamit, said he was committed to ensuring that the bridge was rebuild with a stronger structure if he was elected, adding that a new bridge would likely solve the safety issue for residents, and make daily movements easier, including student access to school and other local economic activities.

The new bridge and the construction of Sekolah Kebangsaan Binsulok, which was previously dilapidated, were BN’s efforts headed by Mohamad, who is Deputy Foreign Minister.

BN is contested 45 state seats, including Membakut, in which Rusman faces a 10-cornered fight to unseat incumbent Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif of GRS, who has held the seat since 2004.
