KUALA KRAI, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- Six villages in Kuala Krai were hit by floods early this morning following heavy rain, said Kuala Krai Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) chief Nik Ahmad Afsham Nik Pa.
He said the affected villages were Kampung Bedal, Kampung Bukit Sireh, Kampung Chenulang, Kampung Kebun Pisang, Kampung Pasir Jering and Kampung Kuala Pertang.
"All victims have been evacuated to nearby relief centres (PPS) by rescue agencies, including the Fire and Rescue Department, police and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force.
“Monitoring and rescue operations will continue to be carried out around the clock should flooding occur in other areas,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.
Nik Ahmad Afsham added that a 400 metre stretch of the road near the RISDA Office at Jalan Bukit Sireh, Kampung Bedal and Kuala Nal has been closed to all types of light vehicles due to the floods.
According to the Social Welfare Department’s Info Bencana, six PPSs have been opened in Kuala Krai to accommodate 147 victims from 52 families as of 11 am today.
Meanwhile, a Bernama survey in several of the affected villages found that residents had begun parking their vehicles on higher ground to prevent any untoward incidents.
Resident Siti Zulaika Awang, 26, from Kampung Kebun Pisang in Chenulang, said she was unable to go to work today as her home had been flooded since 4 am.
“At around 1 am, it rained heavily, causing the water level to rise rapidly and enter my house about three hours later.
“Although I had to stay awake throughout the night, I am grateful that I managed to place several household items on higher ground,” she said.
