1.8 Million Malaysians Have Benefited From MySalam Since 2019

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 (Bernama) -- A  total of 1.8 million people have benefited from the mySalam health protection scheme since it was launched in 2019 up to September this year, highlighting its effectiveness in helping low-income households cope with medical costs and emergencies.

Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said the beneficiaries include those who received hospitalisation and critical illness benefits, former COVID-19 patients under investigation (PUI), and individuals who claimed for medical devices.

She said critical illness claims accounted for the highest payout, with total disbursements of RM658 million involving 82,000 recipients, while hospitalisation benefits amounted to RM378 million for 1.22 million people.

“As of September 2025, the remaining mySalam fund is RM490.8 million. The scheme provides free takaful health coverage to B40 individuals who are also Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah aid recipients, aged 18 to 65, and their spouses.

“Currently, the mySalam trust deed limits benefits to the low-income group, and the scheme will continue in 2026 in line with the recent budget announcement,” she said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Lim was replying to a supplementary question from Mordi Bimol (PH-Mas Gading) about the total amount of medical claims and the number of people who have benefited from mySalam, as well as whether the government plans to extend similar assistance to the middle-income (M40) group.

She said the proposal to expand mySalam coverage to the M40 group will be thoroughly studied before being implemented, to ensure they receive appropriate health protection.

Apart from mySalam, she said Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), in collaboration with the insurance and takaful industry, also offers Perlindungan Tenang products for underserved and vulnerable groups, particularly the B40 and M40 categories.

She said these products comprise insurance and takaful plans approved by BNM that meet five key criteria: affordability, accessibility, good value, ease of understanding and purchase, and a simple claims process.
