27/11/2025 07:46 PM

KUCHING, Nov 27 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) is on heightened alert for the Northeast Monsoon (MTL), with more than 383 personnel and 141 auxiliary firefighters mobilised in preparation for potential flooding.

Sarawak JBPM director Jamri Masran said the Rapid Response Team (PGC) has also been activated to serve as a guide for all personnel in maintaining the highest level of preparedness.

“We want every station, every unit and every firefighter to fully understand their respective roles, follow the correct procedures, and be ready to act swiftly when required.

“In the MTL context, time is a critical factor, as even a second’s delay can have a significant impact on saving lives,” he said at the launch of JBPM’s Northeast Monsoon 2025/2026 preparedness programme.

He said the department has received 17 boats to strengthen its monsoon preparation, with deployment focused on flood-prone areas.

“This is to facilitate and expedite early-stage rescue operations by local communities in moving flood victims to safe locations.

“We will also be supplying equipment such as tents and chainsaws to three volunteer fire brigades in Kampung Buntal, Bako Indah and PBS Bunan Gega,” he said.

Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, who represented Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian in officiating at the event, expressed confidence that JBPM’s thorough planning, intensive training and full commitment will help safeguard the public during the monsoon season.

“We are aware of the challenges ahead, floods, landslides, strong winds and other risks that threaten lives and property.

“However, I am confident that with JBPM’s meticulous planning, intensive training and high commitment, we will be able to respond more effectively, reduce risks and protect the people,” he said.
