KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- China’s flagship Classical Chinese Poetry Contest will make its European debut in 2025, premiering in the United Kingdom and other key markets as part of a broader push to deepen cultural exchanges through poetry.
Co-produced by China Media Group, the Ministry of Education of China, and the State Language Commission, the programme positions poetry as a universal connector between Eastern and Western audiences.
Since its launch in 2016, the programme has grown into a major cultural phenomenon in China, blending classical verse with a competitive format that appeals to both traditional literature lovers and younger viewers.
According to CGTN in a statement, the 10th anniversary edition brings together contestants from diverse backgrounds—including students, teachers, farmers and firefighters—showcasing the living relevance of classical poetry in everyday life.
Esteemed cultural scholars such as Kang Zhen, Meng Man, Li Bo and Yang Yu will offer commentary that demystifies ancient works and guides global audiences through the emotional and cultural vocabulary that shapes Chinese expression.
The 2025 season incorporates artificial intelligence-generated imagery and advanced lighting effects, creating immersive scenes such as the virtual "Night Market of Prosperous Chang’an" to reimagine classical motifs for modern viewers.
Beloved segments like "Fei Hua Ling" and "Poetry in Painting" return alongside new additions—the "Champions’ League" round and a situational challenge inspired by The Itinerant Peddler—expanding both the intellectual depth and visual appeal of the show.
By entering the European broadcast landscape, the Classical Chinese Poetry Contest reinforces cultural identity for overseas Chinese communities while offering European audiences a dynamic window into China’s poetic heritage.
