KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 20 (Bernama) -- The introduction of the Lindung 24/7 Scheme, which provides round-the-clock social security coverage, is a progressive initiative that strengthens worker protection and reflects the Social Security Organisation’s (PERKESO) commitment to building a more caring and inclusive society, said Alliance For A Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
Welcoming Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Ramanan’s statement that the scheme would be rolled out by PERKESO in the first or second quarter of next year, Lee said extending coverage beyond working hours recognises the reality that workers continue to face risks even after leaving their workplace.
“For decades, PERKESO has provided critical protection for work-related injuries and illnesses. The Lindung 24/7 Scheme marks a significant evolution of this mandate by ensuring workers are protected round the clock, including during commuting, personal activities and daily routines,” he said in a statement today.
Lee added that the scheme would provide greater peace of mind to millions of workers and their families, and is particularly timely given rising road accidents, lifestyle-related risks, and the increasingly blurred boundaries between work and personal life.
He noted that the initiative aligns with modern employment patterns, including flexible work arrangements and the gig economy, where risks are not confined to fixed working hours.
Lee commended the Ministry of Human Resources and PERKESO for their foresight and leadership in introducing the landmark reform, emphasising the importance of public awareness, clear guidelines, and efficient claims processes to ensure the scheme delivers its intended benefits effectively.
“The Lindung 24/7 Scheme is not merely an expansion of coverage, but a strong statement that social security must keep pace with the realities of modern life,” he said, expressing strong support for the initiative and looking forward to its successful rollout for the benefit of Malaysian workers nationwide.
