Give Hannah Yeoh A Chance To Prove Leadership, Says PMKL

05/01/2026 05:15 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 (Bernama) -- The Kuala Lumpur Community Welfare Movement (PMKL) has urged all parties to give newly appointed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh the opportunity to prove her capability in leading the ministry.

PMKL chairman Hussen Zulkarai said racial issues should not be raised following Hannah’s appointment, stressing that any assessment should instead be based on her performance and ability to resolve issues affecting residents in the Federal Territories, particularly in the capital.

“Why is the appointment of YB Hannah Yeoh as Federal Territories Minister being made an issue when she has not even started working yet, nor showing her ability to carry out her duties?

“Why create a perception that YB Hannah Yeoh will become a problem in Kuala Lumpur? We should give her the opportunity and the time to prove her capability in administering the Federal Territories,” he told reporters here today.

He said this in response to criticism from certain quarters that had raised racial sentiments over Hannah’s appointment, stressing that such perceptions were premature and would not contribute to resolving issues faced by the people.

Hussen said attention should instead be focused on efforts to address long-standing issues in Kuala Lumpur, including traffic congestion, parking management, public housing and urban cleanliness.

Meanwhile, PMKL deputy chairman Affa Syarifuddin said relevant parties, including Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) need to implement proactive and integrated measures to resolve major issues plaguing the capital.

He also expressed concerns over privately owned buildings that are dirty, dilapidated and poorly maintained, posing safety risks, as well as the presence of abandoned vehicles in parking areas around the capital, including in People’s Housing Programme (PPR) areas.

“For instance, there are many abandoned vehicles in public parking areas, PPR and public housing estates that are no longer in use. There are also shop premises misusing public parking spaces to wash or sell vehicles.

“We urge DBKL to enforce the law and take firm action so that Kuala Lumpur can become more organised, cleaner and more comfortable for the people,” he added.
