KINABATANGAN, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- As of 10 am today, 80 police personnel, representing 47.09 per cent of those eligible, have cast their votes in the early voting process for the Kinabatangan parliamentary by-election.

In the Lamag state by-election, 34 police personnel, or 47.34 per cent, have also cast their votes.

The Election Commission (EC) reported that out of the 196 eligible police personnel, 189 are voting in person, while seven have opted for postal voting.

Early voting is being held at the Kinabatangan District Police Headquarters, which opened at 8 am and will close at 5 pm today. The process is proceeding smoothly under clear weather conditions.

Both by-elections were called following the death of the incumbent, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, 66, on Dec 5 last year.

The Kinabatangan by-election features a three-cornered contest involving Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar of Barisan Nasional (BN), Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman (Warisan) and Goldam Hamid (Independent), while Lamag sees a straight fight between Mohd Ismail Ayob (BN) and Mazliwati Abdul Malek (Warisan).

Kinabatangan parliamentary constituency covers three state seats: Sukau, Lamag, and Kuamut, with a total of 48,722 registered voters. Lamag has 13,899 voters.

Polling day for both by-elections is set for this Saturday.
