KINABATANGAN, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- The early voting process for the Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections, at the Kinabatangan district police headquarters (IPD), went smoothly today.

Kinabatangan district police chief Supt Ravi Duraisamy said the high level of cooperation from all officers and personnel at the IPD allowed the early voting process to proceed smoothly without any disruptions.

“Before the early voting, we conducted briefings for officers and personnel to ensure they are prepared to cast their votes.

“Everything went well and there were no issues. Everyone understood their responsibilities and gave full cooperation,” he told reporters after inspecting the early voting process here today.

Commenting on the security of the ballot boxes after the conclusion of the early voting process, he assured that security measures are at the highest level.

The early voting centre opened at 8 am today and will close at 5 pm.

The Kinabatangan parliamentary by-election is a three-cornered contest involving Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar of Barisan Nasional (BN), Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman (Warisan) and Goldam Hamid (Independent). Meanwhile, the Lamag state by-election is a straight fight between Mohd Ismail Ayob (BN) and Mazliwati Abdul Malek (Warisan).

The by-elections were called following the death of the incumbent, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, 66, on Dec 5 last year.

The Kinabatangan parliamentary constituency, which comprises Sukau, Lamag and Kuamut state seats, has 48,722 registered voters, including 13,899 in Lamag.

Polling for both by-elections will be on Saturday.
