LUAS: Research, Field Studies Strengthen Integrated Water Management In Selangor

SHAH ALAM, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) is strengthening strategic collaboration with universities and educational institutions, through research and field studies, as part of its preparedness efforts to enhance the resilience of the state’s water resources management.

LUAS said the collaboration also covers hydrological modelling, early pollution detection and the development of more efficient monitoring methods, in line with the Internet of Things (IoT) technology approach.

“In the context of climate change and emerging pollution threats, such collaboration is crucial to support long-term adaptation planning, including flood and drought risk management, as well as the continued protection of Selangor’s water resources,” it said in a statement, today.

Apart from educational institutions, LUAS also emphasises collaboration across agencies, industry players and local communities, to ensure the implementation of a more holistic and integrated water resources management approach.

It said findings from all studies, whether conducted by academic institutions, consultants or through internal monitoring, will be thoroughly evaluated in terms of operational applicability, impact on water quality and compatibility with the existing legal framework.

LUAS stressed that field data serves as a verification mechanism to ensure that research findings reflect on-the-ground realities and can be implemented effectively.

Relevant findings will be translated into improvements to standard operating procedures (SOPs), technical guidelines and water resource governance, and as input for state policy formulation, it said.

Meanwhile, Associate Member of the Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Universiti Malaya, Prof Dr Mohamad Pauzi Zakaria, said supporting research was a crucial step in ensuring that water sources remain free from prohibited substances, increasing the supply of clean water for a growing population and meeting industrial needs.

He said the application of technology and scientific research had proven effective, in enabling treated raw water to be channelled safely to consumers.

“Strong research support and commitment from all parties, including the state government, are crucial in addressing issues related to the safety, quality and sustainability of water resources, in a comprehensive and sustainable manner,” he said.

Previously, LUAS said that it would continue to support academic research related to water resource management through field studies and water sampling activities across the state.

It also encourages stakeholders, particularly university students, to explore Selangor’s water resources, to enhance their research experience and gain a better understanding of the agency’s role in managing the state’s water resources.
