50 Missing As Boat Capsizes In Mediterranean

ROME, Jan 26 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- A boat carrying 51 migrants recently capsized in the Mediterranean, leaving one confirmed survivor and 50 others still missing, according to local media, reported Xinhua.

The sole survivor was rescued by a merchant ship and taken to a hospital in Malta for treatment.

According to the survivor, the boat departed from Libya on Thursday and capsized the following day.

He clung to the wreckage and drifted in the water until he was rescued.

Following the accident, search and rescue operations were launched, but 50 people remained missing.

Data from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) showed that 14 people have gone missing or confirmed dead in the Mediterranean since the beginning of this year.

The number of deaths and disappearances reached 1,873 along the route in 2024.
