LABUAN, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- Labuan International School (LIS) today organised a large-scale Chinese New Year celebration, bringing together more than 400 students in a festive programme aimed at fostering cultural appreciation and unity.

The celebration featured vibrant lion and dragon dance performances accompanied by the rhythmic beats of drums and the firing of firecrackers, creating a lively atmosphere across the school grounds.

Notably, the performances also involved students, reflecting active participation and experiential learning beyond the classroom.

The highlight of the event was the traditional eye-dotting ceremony of the lions, jointly performed by Labuan Advisory Council member Datuk Seri Patrick Tiong and Lion Transport managing director Clement Tiong, symbolising the awakening of the lions to usher in good fortune, prosperity and success for the new year.

Other performances during the celebration included choir performances and solo singing presentations by students, showcasing their talents and adding a creative dimension to the cultural programme.

LIS chief executive officer Raaj Ganesh Chandragasan said the celebration was part of the school’s commitment to holistic education and cultural inclusivity.

“This event is not only about celebrating Chinese New Year, but also about providing our students with meaningful exposure to Malaysia’s multicultural traditions while encouraging confidence, teamwork and student leadership through active participation,” he also said.

He added that such large-scale cultural celebrations help strengthen unity among students from diverse backgrounds while nurturing mutual respect and understanding.

Students and teachers were also seen dressed in traditional Chinese attire, adding colour and cultural significance to the event, which concluded with students gathering to enjoy the performances and festive ambience, thus marking it as one of the school’s largest cultural events for the year.
