Zakat Fitrah In Terengganu Set At Minimum Rates Of RM10, RM20

KUALA TERENGGANU, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- Zakat fitrah (personal tithe) rates in Terengganu this year have been set at no less than RM10 and RM20 per person, said State Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIDAM) president Datuk Zulkifli Ali.

He said the rates were based on the price of rice consumed by residents in the state and must be paid through 906 appointed amils (tithe collectors) or via the institution’s official website.

“Zakat fitrah can only be paid in cash, equivalent to the value of one Baghdad bushel, or 2.6 kg of rice.

“For individuals who consume Basmati rice or its equivalent, the reference rate of zakat fitrah is RM20 per person,” he said at a press conference here today.

Meanwhile, Zulkifli said that for this Ramadan, MAIDAM would distribute about RM15.79 million in zakat assistance to 29,402 recipients, comprising the poor and asnaf.

He said that, unlike in previous years when zakat assistance had been given in cash, this year it would be distributed through a system in which recipients could use their identity cards to claim goods and services at selected shops.

Zulkifli said that the method would allow MAIDAM to track the spending patterns of asnaf and ensure that they used the assistance to buy only essential and important goods.

“Recipients can claim essential goods such as dry and wet food supplies, clothing and make utility payments, including telephone bills, through retail outlets, hypermarkets, and online.

“Claims can be made by recipients from Feb 19 to March 31, 2026, at designated shops,” he said.

In the meantime, Zulkifli said that the zakat collection in Terengganu last year stood at RM301.03 million, up about nine per cent from the RM276.96 million collected in 2024.

“Over the past year, MAIDAM has distributed RM324.5 million to asnaf across various categories. The total zakat distribution in Terengganu has surpassed the total collection,” he said.
