JOHOR BAHRU, March 1 (Bernama) -- Sunway Group reaffirmed its commitment to corporate social responsibility through its Sinar Ramadan 2026 programme by hosting a special celebration for 61 senior citizens from Pusat Jagaan Impian Syimah and Persatuan Kebajikan Nur Ehsan Negeri Johor here yesterday.

The programme, carried out in strategic partnership with the Malaysia AIDS Foundation (MAF), Yayasan Raja Zarith Sofiah Negeri Johor (YRZSJ), the Selangor Youth Community (SAY) and the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS), underscores the powerful synergy between the corporate sector and non-governmental organisations in uplifting local communities.

Sunway City Iskandar Puteri chief executive officer Gerard Soosay said a total of 41 senior citizens from Pusat Jagaan Impian Syimah and 20 from Persatuan Kebajikan Nur Ehsan Negeri Johor, together with 14 caretakers, were treated to a special fast-breaking event.

He said Sunway volunteers, comprising staff members, spent meaningful moments interacting with the senior citizens while distributing donations at Pusat Jagaan Impian Syimah.

Volunteers went the extra mile to assist the senior citizens personally, including those who were bedridden, during the food distribution organised by Sunway Big Box Hotel, showcasing their heartfelt care and appreciation.

“The care centre and welfare association also received grocery contributions totaling RM1,500 per month over two months to help support their daily operations,” Gerard told reporters after the programme.

Also present was Sunway Group deputy executive chairman Datin Paduka Sarena Cheah, who added a festive touch to the event by handing over essential items, launching the gimmick of stirring bubur Asyura, distributing date cakes sponsored by Sunway City Iskandar Puteri, and presenting ‘duit raya’ from YRZSJ

Meanwhile, Gerard said the programme, launched under the #SunwayforGood initiative in 2014, has to date benefitted more than 100,000 people, with its continuity becoming an integral part of the company’s culture and core values.

He said the annual initiative not only provided aid to those in need but also served as a platform to encourage staff to actively participate in volunteering and community activities.

“We want to continue giving back and making a positive impact, as it is our motto to support the community through every initiative we undertake,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pusat Jagaan Impian Syimah manager Nor Hasyimah Hamzah expressed heartfelt gratitude to Sunway and all involved, hoping the initiative would inspire the community to pay greater attention to elderly care and support those in need.

“Our monthly costs are quite high, but with Allah’s blessings and the support of so many people, including companies and corporate bodies, it has been a great help to us,” she said.

Nor Hasyimah said the care centre, established in 2008, operates at two locations, Jalan Kemuncak and Jalan Kemaman, and provides a home for elderly people, especially those without family or who are homeless.
