MELAKA, March 10 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Melaka and Negeri Sembilan has intensified patrols under Op Khas Pagar Laut to curb smuggling activities and the entry of illegal immigrants in the waters from Kuala Kesang to Kuala Sepang, particularly during Ramadan and Syawal.

Melaka and Negeri Sembilan MMEA deputy operations director Maritime Commander Norrimi Hassan said the operation focuses on several identified hotspots considered high-risk areas to curb cross-border crime via sea routes.

“The operation, which is carried out simultaneously nationwide, is a proactive measure to enhance enforcement levels and curb cross-border crime.

“The operation is also intensified as the Ramadan and Syawal period is often exploited by irresponsible parties to carry out illegal activities,” he told reporters here.

Norrimi said the operation, which runs from Feb 27 to April 10, is divided into four main phases — the Preparation Phase, Pre-Festive Enforcement Phase, Festive Enforcement Phase and the Monitoring and Post Exercise Debrief Phase.

He said the operation is significant in ensuring that maritime security control in the country’s waters remains at an optimum level through continuous patrols, strategic monitoring and enhanced enforcement.

In this regard, he called on the maritime community, shipping operators and the public to channel information to the authorities if they detect any suspicious activities in the waters of the Strait of Melaka.

“Cooperation from all parties is crucial to ensure that the nation’s waters remain safe, controlled and free from any maritime crime threats,” he said.
