KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 (Bernama) -- Creating individual or family portraits on social media using artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining popularity as it is not only quick and convenient but also allows users to express their creativity without limits.

As Hari Raya Aidilfitri approaches, a digital “poster war” has flooded social media platforms, with many netizens sharing unique creations ranging from studio-style portraits and three-dimensional pop-up Raya cards to imaginative visuals that appear as if they have emerged from the pages of a book.

By simply uploading a personal photo and adding a few text instructions or prompts, visually striking portraits can be generated, complete with village backdrops and festive elements such as ketupat, without the need to book a professional photography session. This enables families to create their own digital keepsakes to save or share.

Afiq Yahaya, 37, administrator of the creative community AI Prompters Malaya, said interest in producing Raya posters using AI has grown rapidly as Malaysians naturally enjoy sharing festive moments on social media.

“Since the start of Ramadan, users have already begun sharing AI-generated Raya posters. Usually, about a week before Aidilfitri, the number of posts increases as people try out new concepts and share them with friends on social media or WhatsApp,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

According to Afiq, prompts usually include details about the subject, background, lighting and specific visual styles to ensure the generated images appear more realistic and closely match the user’s idea.

The more detailed the prompt, the more accurate the resulting image will be.

“A prompt is essentially how we communicate with AI. The instructions must be clear, covering aspects such as the visual concept, background, artistic style and specific elements so that the generated result closely reflects what we imagine,” he said.

However, Afiq stressed that AI merely functions as a tool, while human creativity remains the key factor in producing compelling visuals.

“AI simplifies the process of creating artwork, but the ideas, experiences and creativity still come from people. Two individuals may use the same prompt, yet the results will differ depending on their creativity,” he said.

Social media user Abdul Wafi said he was interested in trying AI to create Raya posters as he wanted to produce greetings that were more creative than the usual digital cards.

“With AI, we can experiment with many ideas, such as a village setting, studio-style or cartoon illustrations, simply by writing instructions. It’s exciting because you can see your ideas transformed into visuals,” he said.
